Incremental Bogota
Incremental Bogota | Bogota, Colombia
In this expanded practices studio we studied urban, environmental, economic, and social forces to inform the design of an affordable housing complex. The studio also challenged the relationship between ‘architect’ and ‘user’ by encouraging us to design for incremental change by residents over time. After a site visit to Bogota, Colombia, we mapped the city’s physical systems like highways, buses, and airports, along with cultural nodes such as theaters and libraries. After designing a site strategy to respond to respond to relevant forces, we explored unit configurations, materials, and structural systems to design the retail, housing, and public spaces on site. We are employed a plugin system based on a concrete frame to support incremental growth by residents to suit their needs over time, allowing the system to adapt quickly while maintaining our original design language.
